What is too much to ask of an Executive Assistant?
When I was hired, I wasn’t told how many personal things I would have to do…sometimes I feel more like a wife than an Exec. Assistant.
I have to schedule haircuts, Doctor’s appointments, get watches repaired, return cable boxes from home, cook for meetings at my boss’ house…I’ve even been asked to clean his car! I have to call every morning and wake my boss up to go over every part of the day.
I’m starting to lose my patience. None of these things were in the list of tasks I was presented when I was hired.
What do you think? No other Exec. Assistant I know has to do any of these things! I’m hard working, but I think I’m being taken advantage of…
It sounds like you are a personal assistant not an executive assistant. If you work for a small, privately owned company I’m not sure if you have any recourse. All job descriptions have the “and whatever else is needed” phrase.
If you work for a large publicly held company, you definitely need to bring it to the attention of HR. Most likely the shareholders don’t want to be paying a personal assistant unless you really are a personal assistant.
If you work for a med-size organization 500-3000 employees it becomes a bit tough. Definitely talk to someone in HR and ask them to help you determine what to do. But the “what to do” becomes somewhat subjective based on who the person is – sole owner of a $100M company which he probably can dictate what you do and may not know any better. Or if he’s the owners cousin and thinks he is a “big dude” based on who he is.
