The Newbie Guide to Working from Home
If you were to ask yourself the question “What are two of the most important things I need in my life?” – The answer would probably be Time and Money. time to do all the things you want to do and money to do them with. Imagine waking up each morning and enjoying the freedom to do what you want to do each day? Spend time with family and friends, take a walk in the park, enjoy a picnic, go shopping, start a college course, go travelling around the world, anything you want to do? And of course, having a reasonable income to pay the bills with and allow you to enjoy life. Imagine owning a nice house with a nice garden for the children to play in and that dream car you’ve always wanted? Maybe there are many other things you want but until now you have had no way of getting them.
The average person spends 8-12 hours of their day travelling to an office or factory to work for someone else. Their working hours and breaks are decided by the company, their holiday allowance is decided by the company, everything is decided by the company. Many people hate their jobs and their bosses, their bills are piling up, the stress is mounting and they are crying out for an escape. Is this any way to live?
This guide will show you a way out of this “limited” lifestyle by introducing you to the concept of working from home. I will teach you how you can do this step by step and will try to explain things as clear as I can to you. However I am also going to be direct and honest with you because I don’t want to give you any false hopes. I am going to tell you exactly what to expect so you can decide whether you want to continue reading or not. The next two paragraphs will explain what exactly is required from you if you want more free time and financial freedom in your life, so I urge you to read them and give what you see careful consideration.
THE TRUTH ABOUT MAKING MONEY ONLINE
There are many ways of working from home but this guide concentrates on one – and that is known as Network Marketing or Referral Marketing which involves the use of your computer and the Internet. This is not a JOB. Therefore if you are expecting someone to pay you a weekly salary for mailing envelopes or assembling something then this is not for you. If you are looking for something that will make you rich by next week then this is not for you. You are actually setting up your own home based business which requires time and patience. At a later point you will need to put some money into your business as it takes money to make money.
Many people are not willing to put time and money into a business, often making excuses that they don’t have time and money. The truth is that there is no such thing as a free lunch. You can’t make money doing nothing and it does not come overnight.
There are many people on the Internet that will tell you that you can make thousands of dollars in 30 days just by purchasing their “killer report” – but these often cause people to lose money unless they are experienced marketers.
This guide will teach you how to build your business and make things easier for you but you must be willing to put in the time and effort to make it work. So the question you must ask yourself is: “Am I willing to do this?”
Your first few months you may earn nothing, or you may earn a lot. It depends on how many people join you in your business. You get paid only when other people join your network and make their investment so you must be willing to accept that your first few months may be spent investing before you make anything back.
Just like any business you will probably start running at a loss but stick with it and you will soon be in profit, and on your way to making a more sizable income.
Still with me? That’s good. You have made your first step towards achieving a better future for yourself. Starting your own Network Marketing business is not hard nor is it expensive as long as you stick to the teachings of this guide.
CHOOSING A BUSINESS
When choosing a business to run you have two options: To sell a product or offer a service. For example you could sell health products or offer your services as a Plumber or Builder. Of course you would need to find customers who want health products or have a leaky tap that needs fixing.
People often turn their hobbies into a business. For example, if you were a good cook you could sell food to local people and build up a list of customers who loved that Chocolate Cream cake you made and want to stuff their faces with more.
If you play a musical instrument you could give people lessons or if gardening is your hobby you could grow and sell plants. There are many ideas you can consider, although I have never found a way of making money from sitting down watching TV.
SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS
There are certain factors to consider when setting up your business. For example, how much to charge for your service or product? How much money can you afford to put into your business? Remember you need to be a Freedom Seeker and not a Freebie Seeker. You cannot expect to make a fortune overnight in your new business – it takes time to build.
This guide concentrates on building a network marketing home business, which is where you actually work with an established company. The company offers the product and/or service while you simply refer customers to them. Once the customer makes a purchase the company ships their product to them and gives you a percentage of the sale – a commission. This is by far the easiest home business to run as the company does most of the work regarding products.
HOME BUSINESS PROGRAM
A “Home Business Program” is a business that is already established and allows everyday people like you and me to work with them to earn money. The program supplies everything you need from advertising materials to training, along with a wide range of products. As these are “Internet Based” home business programs they also supply you with affiliate websites to show to your prospects.
WHAT IS NETWORK MARKETING
Companies have discovered that a good way of getting customers is by “word of mouth” advertising – for example if someone bought a meal from a restaurant they could tell their friends that they recommend it and the restaurant gets more customers. Those people go and tell their friends who tell their friends and so on and the restaurant gets plenty of diners without spending any money on advertising.
Therefore these companies make an agreement with people by offering them a percentage of sales made from customers that were referred to them. Rather than spend money on advertising and hope people will read that advert and purchase from them, the companies are happy to pay a commission to you on each sale you get for them. So the companies are happy because they only have to pay for each sale generated and you are happy because you have earned some money.
At this point you may be thinking that you have to go knocking on doors, calling people on the phone and pester your family and friends to buy from the company, you may also be thinking that you don’t want to do that. Well you don’t have to, unless you want to of course. This guide will teach you how to get people coming to you rather than you going to them, so you don’t have to approach your family and friends – just show them your earnings and they will probably join you then
You don’t have to become a salesman who knocks on people’s doors with a suitcase full of junk and use smarmy sales patter. You don’t have to stick your foot in the door or worry about being bitten by some big dog or troublesome infant. You are using the Internet as a tool to attract people to your offer which means you don’t have to approach people.
So to explain Network Marketing let us say that someone called Joe talks to his friend Tom about a restaurant and the nice food it serves. Joe is not trying to get Tom to buy a meal, he is only telling him around the restaurant. Tom likes what he hears and decides to go and purchase a meal. Joe goes and tells his other friends about the restaurant and they all go and buy a meal. Tom decides to tell his friends and they go and buy a meal. One of the friends Tom has referred is called Jane and she tells her friends about the restaurant and so on.
So what is happening here is that Joe, Tom and Jane have each brought a group of friends to the restaurant and each one gets a commission for each friend in their group that buys a meal. Each group of people is known as a “downline” and more than one downline becomes a network. Remember that Joe has referred Tom and other friends who have become his downline and Tom has built his own downline of friends, so Joe has two downlines in his network. Now Jane builds her own downline and as she is in Tom’s downline
This gives Tom two downlines in his network. As for Joe, he has both Tom and Jane’s downline as well as his own in his network. The more downlines built, the bigger the network. So Network Marketing involves getting people to join your group (or downline) and getting them to form their own groups and getting those groups to form their own downlines and so on. The result is a large network of people all with their own downline groups (or teams) who all purchases meals from the restaurant.
Confused? Don’t worry, it will become clearer as we move on.
HOW TO PROFIT FROM BUILDING A NETWORK
As we have learned – building a downline team of customers allows us to get paid commission from the company for each member of the team that makes a purchase from them. So if one of your team builds their own downline and the company pays them commission from the sales of their team – how does this all benefit you? How do you profit from a network of downline members built by your downline team?
The answer is bonuses. The company offers you a bonus from sales generated from other downlines in your network. Let’s see another explain to explain this.
One of Tom’s downline members spends $15 on a meal and Tom gets $8 commission. Since Tom is in Joe’s network the company pays Joe a $5 bonus because if it wasn’t for Joe Tom’s team would not exist. If Jane’s team made the sale she would make the $8, Tom would receive the $5 bonus and Joe would get $3. A company would normally pay up to five levels. So Joe’s downline is his level one downline, Tom’s downline is Joe’s second level downline and Jane’s downline is Joe’s third level downline. As you may have guessed, Jane’s downline is Tom’s second level.
No doubt there will be some of you reading this who are still unsure about “networks and downlines” but don’t get this worry you because this is something that will become clearer when you join a company’s team of Network Marketers.
The following website will give you more information about Network Marketing (MLM) complete with diagrams.
AFFILIATES, PROSPECTS AND MEMBERS
Up to now I have used the term “Network Marketer” but the more popular name used by a company is “Affiliate”. If you join a company and agree to promote their products for a commission then you become their affiliate. Other companies might use titles such as “members” or “VIPS”. Of course, these titles refer only to people who have joined the companies. A prospect is someone who has shown interest in the company but has not joined it yet.
YOUR BUSINESS OR THEIR BUSINESS
After reading this far you may be thinking that this is not your own business but someone else’s business, that you are just a salesman for that business.
When you join a company that allows Network Marketing you are not classed as a salesman – more like a partner. The company decides what stock and prices it has but the affiliate is in charge of their part of the company, which is building a network and making sales. There are people who have a higher position in the company than you and they are called your upline team. As an affiliate you write and place your own adverts, you answer mail from customers and so on, treating the company as if it was your own. The only difference is that your upline team which goes right up to the owner are responsible for other tasks such as choosing new stock. In other words each member is assigned a role. In your network marketing business you may be called a “Trainer Team Coach” which means your role is to teach people how to run their business. Someone who has the title of “Promotions Director” would be responsible for promoting new products and special offers. So each person has a role and can build themselves up to a higher position in the company.
THE ROLE OF A SPONSOR
As we have discussed, joining a company gives you the role and title of affiliate, which is how you are recognised to the company. But what about your downline team? What is your title and role concerning them? The answer is: a sponsor.
The sponsor’s role is to offer their support to their downline team and answer any questions they have. Unless the company requires them to do other things the sponsor does little more than welcome the new affiliate to their team and offer to support them and give them any assistance they need. The sponsor would often share any methods they have found with their downline that they use themselves to grow their business.
This is called “Duplication”.
DUPLICATION
Duplication is taking methods you have used to promote your business and teaching them to your downline team. It is not a good idea to keep your working marketing methods to yourself while your team is struggling because your success relies on building your network. If your downline team is not making any money then they will quit and you lose money.
Rather than trying to find new team members all the time you will benefit more by keeping your team happy and keeping them in your downline – then they can continue to earn money for themselves which of course also earns bonuses for you. Let us look at some methods you can use to promote your business.
PROMOTING YOUR BUSINESS
You don’t have to use all these methods, they are here to give you an idea of how to get people to look at your offer.
WORD OF MOUTH
Speaking to friends and family about your business is a good free way to advertise. Offering them a card and asking them to check out your affiliate website is a good idea because the website itself does the “sales pitch”. You must remember that some people you talk to will not be interested so it is best not to try and force it on them. You may also meet lazy people (Freebie Seekers) who want to make lots of money without working or people who tell you it’s all a scam or people who tell you that you’ll never make it. Don’t let this put you off, there are people out there who are willing to give the business a chance and are willing to work.
LEAFLET CAMPAIGN
You could design a small A5 advertisement using a desktop publishing program and get a printing company to print off a few hundred of them for you. Then all you have to do is distribute them to people. You could post them through peoples doors, ask your local shop to display them on their counter offering a small fee in return, leave some in doctor’s and dentist’s surgeries…in fact, anywhere people will see them. Why not paste one on your car window for other drivers to see?
E-MAIL MARKETING
Many companies on the Internet offer to send your advertisement to their list of “opportunity seekers”. Prices can start from $3 for a hundred e-mails. Anyone who reads your advertisement can respond to it by clicking on the link to your affiliate website.
PAID TO READ E-EMAIL
Some companies offer their members a small payment for reading adverts. Members can even build a downline team and earn more money. The member will get paid for viewing your website for a number of seconds.
BANNER ADVERTISING
A banner is a small rectangular bar which displays a small graphic and a one or two line advert. Some companies will display the banner on their websites and charge you for either the number of times displayed or for the number of times someone clicks on it.
TRAFFIC EXCHANGES
Traffic Exchanges display your site to its members in return for you viewing other member’s sites. Each time you view a site you earn credits which are used to display your website. You can purchase credits as well. An excellent and popular way of free advertising.
SAFELISTS
A safe list is a membership of thousands of people who you can post your advert to. You also agree to receive their adverts in return. The problem with the average safe list is that people set up a junk mail account and your adverts end up there, never read. If you use this method then only use “Credit Based” safe lists – this means that someone has to click on your affiliate site URL and view your website to get credits. With this safe list you need credits to post adverts.
If you are going to use safelists I recommend setting up a free GMAIL account as your list address because you will get a lot of mail. Safelists tend to hate Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL so Gmail is the best to sign up with.
VIRAL PROGRAMS
Viral programs allow you to advertise various affiliate websites using just one website. The idea is that anyone who signs up for your viral program sets up their own links for other affiliate programs and they become part of your team. Other sites work by getting you to read four other websites before they add your website to the end. So when you advertise your viral site people see your ad and three others before they can add their own. Can result in thousands of visitors.
BUILD YOUR OWN MAILING LIST
A message I often see is: “The money’s in the list”. This is a great way of promotion because you are not actually selling anything. You are simply asking people to join your mailing list if they are interested in what you have to offer. You could be offering to send them money making opportunities, advertising tips, how-to-guides and so on. This gives you a list of people to mail to who actually want to hear from you.
PROMOTION
Many marketers find they are more successful in getting people to view their offer by offering a free gift. This could be a free program, e-book or report.
DEALING WITH ADVERTISING COMPANIES
Advertising Companies are not guaranteed to get you members; they are only guaranteed to get people to view your website. People will only join your business if they are interested in what you have to offer. Not all advertising companies will give you a good service. It is a case of trial and error finding the good companies and separating them from the bad.
SETTING A BUDGET
When you advertise, it is recommended to give yourself a budget. Many people make the mistake of spending a fortune on their credit cards buying advertising and end up building huge debts. Decide what you can afford to spend on your business each week/month and stick with that until you start to make money. You can then increase your budget if you wish.
It is quite easy to fall into the trap of thinking “If I spend a lot of money on my business I’ll get rich quicker”. This kind of thinking has left people with a lot of debt and lost faith in becoming successful online. Decide on a monthly budget you feel you can spend comfortably and stick to that budget – do not start spending more until you start earning.
BE PATIENCE
We are all anxious to make money as quick as possible but unless you are an experienced Network Marketer you are going to have to play the waiting game and be patience. It takes time to build any business. You may start making money in your first month or it may take a little longer. Many people will download this guide and probably never get round to reading it or be scared off by the “W” (work) word. But you will get people who join and start to build their teams so be patience.
GET RICH QUICK OR GET RICH SLOW
I’ve told you that it takes time to build a business and get rich – but what about all those sites on the Internet that claim you can earns thousands of dollars in 30 days?
These sites are either scams or unworkable methods for a newbie. They target the people who want to make huge profits quickly with little or no work and who are willing to pay for the information. The people who get rich quick are the ones behind the sites so be careful. Here is a typical example of a get rich quick scheme.
A company fills its website full of pictures of the beach and large wads of cash and tells you that their method will earn you $500 a time while you sit on the beach enjoying the sun. So you read through all the sales hype and when it comes to sign up guess what? They want $800 from you! That’s $500 for your sponsor and $300 for the main company. But what do you get for your $500? The same website that you now have to advertise to other people but wait? How many people are willing to hand over that kind of money to someone they don’t even know? I certainly wouldn’t.
Another get rich quick method is the website that tells you that people will fill your Paypal account with $5 bills while you sleep. So you pay your $5 then you advertise and hope to wake up to a few thousand dollars, only to find nothing there.
These methods are only quick cash earners and no good for long term income. The only people who have a chance of making this work is experienced marketers – the ones who have built a huge list of prospects who trust in that person and what they have to offer. Certainly no good for a newbie.
The only true way of making money is the “Get Rich Slow” method. As we have discussed it does take time to build any business if you are new or inexperienced, but the rewards are worth it. Many successful people who now earn $100,000 per month or more have all had their share of ups and downs but they stuck with it and became a success.
MEMBER IDS
You may be asking: “How does the company know which affiliate has made the sale for them?” The answer is that each affiliate has a unique member ID. This can either be a number or a name and usually appears at the end of the website URL.
Here are two examples of these websites (know as affiliate links).
http://www.thecompanyname.com/msmith
http://www.thecompanyname.com/512034
So when a sale is made of a product or a membership the company knows which affiliate to pay commission to by looking at the member ID (msmith or 512034)
